Theories of Context Effects in Multialternative, Multiattribute Choice

چکیده

Over the past several decades, researchers in psychology, neuroscience, marketing, and economics have been keen to understand context effects multialternative, multiattribute decision making. These occur when choices among existing alternatives are altered by addition of a new alternative choice set. The violate classic theories led development computational mathematical models that explain how underlying cognitive neural mechanisms give rise effects. This article reviews dynamic these effects, comparing across models. Most incorporate an attention mechanism, which suggests plays important role I conclude discussing recent empirical studies hypothesize changes could be responsible for recently observed reversals

The multiattribute linear ballistic accumulator model of context effects in multialternative choice.

Context effects occur when a choice between 2 options is altered by adding a 3rd alternative. Three major context effects--similarity, compromise, and attraction--have wide-ranging implications across applied and theoretical domains, and have driven the development of new dynamic models of multiattribute and multialternative choice. We propose the multiattribute linear ballistic accumulator (ML...

Choice processes in multialternative decision making

We study how the mechanisms of choice influence preferences when animals face more than 2 alternatives simultaneously. Choice mechanisms can be hierarchical (if alternatives are assigned to categories by their similarity and choice is between categories) or simultaneous (if options enter the choice process individually, each with its own value). The latter, although simpler, can lead to counter...

Application of Voting Geometry to Multialternative Choice

This paper presents an application of voting geometry to individual decision making. We demonstrate that a number of decision anomalies can arise as a natural consequence of the aggregation of preferences of different neural systems. We present a proof of existence of a set of voting procedures that can account for the attraction effect, the similarity effect and the compromise effect, and prov...

Object Representation in Multiattribute Choice

We propose a theoretical framework for understanding how everyday choice objects are represented and how decisions involving these objects are made. Our framework combines insights regarding object and concept representation in semantic memory research with multiattribute choice rules proposed by scholars of decision making. We also outline computational techniques for using our framework to qu...

Loss aversion and inhibition in dynamical models of multialternative choice.

The roles of loss aversion and inhibition among alternatives are examined in models of the similarity, compromise, and attraction effects that arise in choices among 3 alternatives differing on 2 attributes. R. M. Roe, J. R. Busemeyer, and J. T. Townsend (2001) have proposed a linear model in which effects previously attributed to loss aversion (A. Tversky & D. Kahneman, 1991) arise from attent...
